Union Pacific to Increase Train Speed By 10 MPH Through Parker County For Efficiency and Safety

Spring, Texas, March 30, 2006 – To improve efficiency and safety, Union Pacific will gradually add 10 mph to its maximum train speed through Parker County, beginning April 10.

Following Federal Railroad Administration regulations, the railroad will gradually increase the maximum speed limit from 50 mph to 60 mph for both freight and passenger trains that operate on its tracks through Parker County. Trains traveling through the area will be able to operate at 55 mph by April 10 and 60 mph on April 17.

This measure is expected to improve public traffic flow and grade crossing safety by increasing train traffic fluidity through the area. Statistics show that more highway-rail grade crossing collisions occur at slower train speeds. At the same time, slower train speeds can cause traffic delays as trains occupy crossings longer.
