Union Pacific Urges Hunters to Avoid Railroad Right of Way

Omaha, Neb., October 21, 2005 – Union Pacific Railroad urges hunters to avoid the railroad's right of way this hunting season.

"Last year, 480 people died while trespassing on the property of railroads throughout the United States," said Dennis Jenson, general director-police operations. "As hunters head outdoors this year, we want to remind them that walking on the railroad's right of way is extremely dangerous because you never know when a train will come along. It is also against the law."

Last year 42,278 people were caught trespassing on railroad property and 12,568 were arrested.

Trespassers on the railroad's right of way are subject to arrest for violating trespassing laws and can face jail time and a fine.
