Union Pacific's Response Management Communications Center Awarded Elite CALEA Accreditation

Omaha, Neb., December 05, 2013 – Union Pacific's Response Management Communications Center (RMCC) recently earned accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), joining an elite group recognized for commitment to excellence in law enforcement.

Union Pacific's RMCC has the distinction of being one of the few private communications centers to receive accreditation. This honor is reserved for agencies that have demonstrated the highest standards in four areas: policy and procedures, administration, operations and support services.

"In order to qualify for accreditation, Union Pacific's RMCC met the criteria for more than 200 professional standards," said Bob Grimaila, vice president of Safety, Security and Environment at Union Pacific. "We are proud of CALEA's validation that the RMCC is committed to providing the very best public safety communications as we serve our employees, customers and the nearly 7,300 communities in which we operate."

From its beginnings as a dispatching center for the Union Pacific police force, the RMCC has evolved into a critical link within Union Pacific's security response system. Around the clock, RMCC critical call dispatchers answer phone calls from employees, law enforcement and the public reporting emergencies and other incidents occurring on Union Pacific property.

"Taking part in CALEA's accreditation process was the perfect vehicle to strengthen foundational processes," said Bob Morrison, chief of police at Union Pacific. "For example, the RMCC implemented a training program that enabled critical call dispatchers to communicate more effectively with hearing-impaired callers."

Representatives from Union Pacific's RMCC and Police Department accepted the accreditation during CALEA's conference in Winston-Salem, N.C.

CALEA was established in 1979 as a result of combined efforts of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), National Organization of Black Law Enforcement (NOBLE), National Sheriffs' Association (NSA) and the Police Executive Research Fund (PERF) to establish a law enforcement credentialing authority. According to CALEA, only 17 percent of U.S. law enforcement agencies are accredited.
