Shakopee, Minn., July 11, 2013 Union Pacific Railroad is continuing a billboard campaign aimed at encouraging Shakopee and West St. Paul drivers to safely use railroad crossings.
At the center of the campaign are billboards featuring a graphic representing a crossing arm and the message "Always expect a train" and a truck straddling the railroad track with the message "Keep your rear clear."
An estimated 450,300 drivers a week will see these messages. In Shakopee the billboards are along Co. Rd. 69, between Hwy. 212 and Hwy 169, Hwy. and Hwy. 101 near Valleyfair Amusement Park. In West St. Paul the messages are on both sides of a billboard on Hwy. 52 just south of Wentworth Ave. The billboards will be posted at various times at these locations from now until Dec. 31.
"These billboards will remind people of their surroundings and keep them safe around railroad tracks," said Wes Lujan, Union Pacific assistant vice president, Public Affairs for Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois. "Trains are operating at all times on railroad tracks, and our No. 1 priority is the safety of our employees and communities."
The billboards will remind drivers "Always expect a train" and "Keep your rear clear". Union Pacific encourages drivers and pedestrians to follow all laws regarding grade crossings and railroad safety.
In addition to the billboard campaign, Union Pacific's UP CARES initiative promotes pedestrian and driver safety through a variety of outreach channels:
Grade crossing education and enforcement, during which motorists violating rail crossing signage and laws are educated about the dangers of such actions. Related "positive enforcement" initiatives reward drivers who operate safely at grade crossings.
