Tour Focuses on Transporting Ethanol Safely

Omaha, Neb., September 1, 2006 – As ethanol shipments continue to increase, the safe and secure transportation of this flammable commodity has become an increasingly important issue for our customers, our employees and for the communities through which we operate. To address this matter, Union Pacific will host a TRANSCAER (Transportation Community Awareness and Emergency Response) tour through Kansas.

TRANSCAER is a voluntary national outreach effort that focuses on assisting communities prepare for an effective response to a possible hazardous material transportation incident.

"The tour is an opportunity for shippers and railroads to help chemical loaders improve their securement processes and to share the latest repair techniques with local emergency personnel," said Lou Wagner, general director-chemical transportation.

TRANSCAER tours traditionally have focused on all hazardous materials; however, increasing demand for ethanol has led this tour to an increased focus on ethanol shipments.

"Unfortunately, ethanol leaks can happen," Wagner said. "As ethanol plants are being built at record pace throughout the Midwest, educating chemical shippers and loaders can help prevent leaking shipments in the future."

Plans are currently under way for two more TRANSCAER training tours focusing on ethanol, scheduled for Nebraska in 2007 and Iowa in 2008.
