Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Recognizes Union Pacific Railroad's Women's Initiative in Support of Breast Cancer Movement

Omaha, Neb., March 29, 2010 – Union Pacific Railroad's women's initiative, LEAD (Lead, Educate, Achieve, Develop), a group of advocates for the Nebraska Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, recently received the annual Outstanding Volunteer Group Award at the 2010 Komen for the Cure Affiliate Conference. Komen for the Cure is the world's largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives and end breast cancer forever.

Komen honored the Union Pacific group for dedication, commitment, creativity and initiative to help breast cancer awareness and programs in Nebraska.

"We are extremely honored to have Susan G. Komen for the Cure® recognize our employee efforts with this award," said Barb Schaefer, Union Pacific senior vice president – Human Resources. "People from across the organization have devoted their time, energy and resources, and we are proud to play a role in the fight to find a cure for breast cancer."

Since 2000, Union Pacific's LEAD has worked to promote the Susan G. Komen Nebraska Race for the Cure® by guiding employee volunteers to organize, plan and implement a registration drive, create promotional ad campaigns for the Race and motivate Union Pacific's 5,000 local employees to embrace Komen's promise on a personal level.

"Union Pacific's unprecedented support of and commitment to Komen in Nebraska is a prime example of how a core group of volunteers can mobilize a corporation," said Lynette Farhart, Komen Nebraska Affiliate executive director. "And, it all starts with Union Pacific chairman and CEO Jim Young, who strongly encourages and supports employees' participation."

Nebraska Race registrations and participation grew by more than 23 percent in 2009 to 11,000 participants and 417 teams. Union Pacific's LEAD group broke its own team member record with 2,481 participants in 2009.  More than $547,000 has been raised since the first Union Pacific group was formed 10 years ago, with $76,500 raised in 2009 alone.

The Komen Outstanding Volunteer Awards were established in 1998 to recognize volunteer work accomplished by individuals and groups within the Komen Affiliate Network. The awards honor volunteers in two distinct categories, Individual and Group. The Outstanding Volunteer Group Award is given to a group of four or more individuals who have worked as a committee to benefit one of Komen's 125 global Affiliates. Overall, these volunteers demonstrate dedication, commitment, creativity, initiative and dependability. Their achievements, time, compassion and volunteer spirit serve as benchmarks for all volunteers.
