Union Pacific's Lou Wagner Earns 2008 TRANSCAER Distinguished Service Award
Omaha, Neb., April 30, 2009 Union Pacific Railroad's Lou Wagner has been named 2008 TRANSCAER Distinguished Service Award honoree. The award is presented in recognition of exceptionally meritorious service to the public in a TRANSCAER capacity. It is just the second time this award has been presented since TRANSCAER was formed in 1986.
TRANSCAER (Transportation Community Awareness and Emergency Response) is the voluntary national outreach effort to help communities prepare for and respond to a possible hazardous material transportation incident.
Wagner, general director of chemical transportation services at Union Pacific, has been an 18-year active TRANSCAER supporter. He serves as vice chairman for the National TRANSCAER Task Group (NTTG) and as regional coordinator for Region III, which includes 14 states in the central and southwestern U.S. He plans to retire at the end of April.
"Lou has been instrumental in fostering TRANSCAER's growth and has been a valuable member of our Union Pacific team," said Jim Young, Union Pacific chairman and CEO. "He has a true passion for his work that is reflected in his accomplishments on behalf of TRANSCAER, Union Pacific and our customers."
"Lou has played a significant role in transforming TRANSCAER from a limited, two-company initiative to a nationally recognized and invaluable source of information and training," said Rollie Shook, NTTG chairman. "He is a true subject matter expert on TRANSCAER methodology and his commitment to TRANSCAER does not stop at the end of the work day. An avid cycler, you can see Lou's TRANSCAER license plate on the back of his bicycle as he rides past you."
Wagner has teamed Union Pacific with most other Class I railroads to deliver many joint TRANSCAER training events. Most recently, he organized a collaborative effort between Union Pacific and BNSF to conduct a Midwest training tour, focusing on ethanol safety and emergency response under the TRANSCAER umbrella. Wagner also championed the cooperative effort between Union Pacific and The Dow Chemical Company to develop a new training program for Toxic Inhalation Hazard (TIH) materials and flammable gases, and he led the NTTG through its recent strategic planning and goal-setting process and helped secure a new TRANSCAER sponsor relationship with the Renewable Fuels Association.
The 2008 TRANSCAER Distinguished Service Award will be presented to Wagner May 19 in Kansas City.
