Union Pacific Earns Prestigious 2008 TRANSCAER National Achievement Award
Omaha, Neb., April 30, 2009 Union Pacific Railroad has earned the prestigious 2008 TRANSCAER National Achievement Award. The award recognizes extraordinary achievement in support of the TRANSCAER (Transportation Community Awareness and Emergency Response) initiative that extends beyond regional geographic boundaries. TRANSCAER is the voluntary national outreach effort to help communities prepare for and respond to a possible hazardous material transportation incident.
In 2008, Union Pacific organized or assisted with multiple events that led to training more than 45,000 employees and 3,035 emergency responders in 172 classes. Overall, Union Pacific participated in more than 117 TRANSCAER or TRANSCAER-related events. Union Pacific's most significant commitments in 2008 included the Iowa Ethanol TRANSCAER Training Tour, the Union Pacific/Dow TRANSCAER TIH Training Tour, and the Pocatello TRANSCAER Simplot/Union Pacific Training Day.
"We are honored to be recognized by our peers for this award," said Diane Duren, Union Pacific vice president and general manager – Chemicals. "We take seriously our responsibility to transport our customers' hazardous material and to help prepare emergency responders for a possible incident. Union Pacific remains committed to safely transporting these products through our communities and to our customer destinations."
Founded in 1986 by Union Pacific and The Dow Chemical Company, TRANSCAER has grown to include other railroads and chemical producers and distributors, trucking companies, emergency response contractors and trade associations and counts the U.S. Department of Energy, Environmental Management Office of Transportation as a partner.
