Omaha, Neb., June 21, 2013 – De Soto, Mo., has been awarded membership in Union Pacific's Train Town USA Registry as part of Union Pacific's ongoing efforts to highlight cities with a historical connection to the railroad. The city received an official Train Town USA resolution signed by Union Pacific Chairman Jim Young in a special presentation at Union Pacific's De Soto Rail Car shop. Union Pacific launched its Train Town USA Registry as part of the railroad's 150th anniversary celebration in 2012.

"We are proud to recognize De Soto as we celebrate our growing up together," said Ben Jones, Union Pacific director - Public Affairs for Missouri and Kansas. "Union Pacific was founded to help connect the nation from east to west. Our shared heritage with De Soto is a source of pride as we remember our past while delivering the goods American businesses and families use every day."

The St. Louis & Iron Mountain Railroad constructed the main line in 1857 to De Soto from St. Louis. The line was constructed to bring iron ore from Iron Mountain, Mo., to St. Louis. The rail car shop in De Soto was constructed in 1865.

The Missouri Pacific merged with the St. Louis & Iron Mountain in 1917 and the Union Pacific and Missouri Pacific merged in 1982.
