Union Pacific's 150th Anniversary

Spring, Texas, September 01, 2012 – West, Texas has been awarded membership in Union Pacific's Train Town USA Registry as part of the railroad's year-long 150th anniversary celebration.

West will receive an official Train Town USA resolution signed by Union Pacific Chairman Jim Young, and West's historical connection with Union Pacific will be featured at www.up150.com. Clint Schelbitzki, Union Pacific director - Public Affairs for Texas, will present the resolution to West Mayor Tommy Muska at the local rail depot on Saturday, September 1 at 9 a.m.

"We are proud to recognize West as we commemorate our railroad's sesquicentennial celebration and growing up together," said Schelbitzki. "The bond between our railroad and early settlements continues to strengthen and grow. Today, Union Pacific serves nearly 7,300 communities where we live, our children grow up together and in which we recruit employees.

"Our shared heritage with West is a source of pride as we remember our past while serving and connecting our nation for years to come."

Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (Katy) laid tracks between Hillsboro and Waco, Texas in 1881, on land previously owned by Thomas West. A train depot was built on the land he sold to the railroad, which became a popular area for businesses to prosper and was the home to the West Post Office.

Czech immigrants came to the area to purchase farmlands, which flourished business by the 1890s. West was officially named a town June 11, 1892, and became the area's center commerce growing cotton and wheat and raising cattle. Union Pacific merged with Katy in 1988. The West Depot is now home to the city's railroad museum and information center.
