Grade Crossing Signal Improvements Allow Union Pacific Railroad to Increase Train Speed, Reduce Motorist Wait Time in Rosenberg, Texas

Spring, Texas, February 19, 2010 – Drivers will spend less time waiting for trains to pass as Union Pacific Railroad increases the speed of its trains on the rail line that parallels Loop 529 in Rosenberg, Texas. The train speed limit will increase from 10 miles per hour to 40 mph on nearly three miles of track that crosses Junker and Scott Roads.

The train speed increase began February 15 and will continue in five mile-per-hour increments each subsequent week. Trains will begin traveling at 40 mph by March 29. Recently completed track improvements will permit the higher speeds in Rosenberg. Crews installed new rail and approximately 4,000 ties in the spring of last year.

Union Pacific plans to spend approximately $2.5 billion in 2010 to support America's current and future freight transportation needs and enhance the safety and efficiency of the railroad's 32,000-mile network. Improved and additional rail capacity benefits everyone. It allows freight rail service to grow, helping to build a cleaner environment. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, freight trains are nearly four times more fuel efficient than trucks. Motorists also benefit from reduced congestion on highways as a single Union Pacific train can remove up to 300 trucks off our roads.
