Tracks are Receiving Improvements on the Union Pacific Line Between Blairstown and Nevada, Iowa
Omaha, Neb., May 25, 2006 Union Pacific Railroad is spending $6.1 million this year on track improvements between Blairstown and Nevada, Iowa, about five miles east of Ames.
Upon completion of the project, crews will have removed and installed 31,200 ties; spread 9,300 tons of rock ballast to ensure a stable roadbed; replaced the surfaces at 27 road crossings, and replaced 53,400 ft. of rail in various curves on the line. Work began on these projects in May and is scheduled to be completed by the end of June.
These improvements are part of the $1.5 billion Union Pacific is planning to spend in 2006 to maintain its track across its more than 32,400-mile system.
