Health Care Benefits and Employee Assistance

Health Care Benefits

Furloughed employees and their covered dependents continue to receive health care benefits for four months.

Union Pacific automatically notifies the Health and Welfare plan providers as employees are furloughed. Employees then receive a notification to apply for COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act). Devised by the American government in 1985, COBRA is health insurance that remains in effect for 18 months after persons are terminated or laid off from their jobs.

If you have questions concerning COBRA coverage, please contact:

Employee Assistance Program

The Employee Assistance Program can provide support for furloughed employees and their dependents. Economic uncertainty can bring stress to families, sometimes making everyday living more difficult. By calling the UP EAP Help Line at 800-779-1212, a furloughed employee or their spouse can be linked to behavioral health resources in their local communities. The Help Line also can assist employees in finding community resources for many different challenges associated with economic stress.

The Institute of HeartMath, an internationally recognized nonprofit research and education organization, has provided a “De-Stress Kit for the Changing Times” on its website. The kit contains helpful ideas and suggestions for managing through the current economic climate.
