General Overview

Peabody Energy (NYSE: BTU) is the world’s largest private-sector coal company and a global leader in clean coal solutions. Peabody’s coal products fuel 10 percent of all U.S. and 2 percent of worldwide electricity generation.

Around the world and around the clock, Peabody’s business platform on five continents creates a strategic advantage. During the year ended Dec. 31, 2009, the company sold 244 million tons of coal to approximately 345 electricity generating and industrial plants in 23 nations.

Peabody has unmatched physical and financial reserves, with the assets and access to capital to enhance shareholder value and seize growth opportunities. The company has approximately 9 billion tons of proven and probable coal reserves and owns, through its subsidiaries, majority interests in 28 coal operations located throughout all major U.S. coal producing regions and in Australia.

Peabody markets, brokers and trades coal in the world’s fastest growing economies. Peabody has trading and business offices in China, Australia, the United Kingdom, Venezuela, Singapore, Indonesia and the United States. Other energy-related commercial initiatives include the development of mine-mouth coal-fueled generating plants, the management of vast coal reserve and real estate holdings, and Btu Conversion technologies to transform coal to natural gas and transportation fuels.

Gateway Mine [PMO], located in Randolph County near Coulterville, Ill., began operation in March 2005. In 2009, the mine sold more than 3 million tons and earned distinction as the only operation in Illinois to earn the "Good Neighbor" award, among the U.S. Department of the Interior's highest honors for stewardship and good neighbor practices. The state-of-the-art mine is among the company's most productive and efficient in the Midwest. Gateway is leading a renaissance in the Illinois Basin, one of the fastest growing coal-producing regions in the United States.

Twentymile Mine [PCO], located near Hayden, Colo., is one of the largest underground mines in the United States. A longwall operation, the mine shipped nearly 8 million tons of coal and ramped up the largest preparation plant west of the Mississippi River in 2009. With a one-million-ton monthly capacity, Twentymile Mine is poised to meet growing demand for its high-Btu, steam coal.

The North Antelope Rochelle Mine [PRO], located 65 miles south of Gillette, Wyo., is one of the world’s largest and most productive mines. In 2009, the mine shipped more than 98 million tons of coal. Caballo Mine is located approximately 20 miles south of Gillette and shipped more than 23 million tons of coal in the past year. Collectively, Peabody’s three mines in Wyoming make Peabody the largest producer in the Powder River Basin, mining coal from seams up to 100 feet thick.
