2008 Pinnacle Award Nomination Form

As part of the continuing effort to eliminate chemical releases from rail cars, (non-accident releases, NARs), Union Pacific Railroad created the UP Chemical Transportation Safety Pinnacle Award. This award was designed to increase shipper awareness by recognizing those shippers who take an instrumental role in preventing NAR incidents.

Information solicited concerning the practices and operating polices of the companies applying for the Pinnacle Award is used to determine the most effective programs for avoiding Non-Accidental Releases (NAR)

Union Pacific Pinnacle Award Criteria:

  • Shipments are not required to originate on Union Pacific
  • Only loads will be considered at this time
  • Only loads of regulated materials (as defined by the U.S. DOT or U.S. EPA) are eligible
There will be four carload categories:
  • 3,000 and over carloads shipped annually
  • 1,000 - 2,999 carloads shipped annually
  • 500 - 999 carloads shipped annually
  • Less than 499 carloads shipped annually
The Pinnacle Award will be given in
each category for all shippers with no
non-accident releases (NARs).

Other Information

  • Volume data will be supplied by Union Pacific Chemical Marketing.
  • Union Pacific Chemical Transportation Safety Group will supply NAR incident data. Only incidents requiring a DOT 580 will be used to develop the number of NAR's
  • There may be multiple winners in each category.
  • The committee reviewing the applications will not make subjective judgments as to the effectiveness of one program over another. The application will be reviewed to ensure that the applicant is taking demonstrated action to prevent NARs.
