Union Pacific to Midland and Odessa Drivers: Always Expect a Train

Union Pacific Railroad is launching a multi-media, bilingual public safety campaign aimed at encouraging Midland and Odessa, Texas, drivers to safely use railroad crossings. The advertising campaign utilizes radio spots and billboards to remind residents of key railroad safety tips.

Radio advertisements feature Union Pacific employees who are engaged in public safety efforts. Their voices remind residential and commercial drivers to use caution when approaching railroad crossings and “if the gates are down, don't go around.” Alfredo Rodriguez, a senior special agent for Union Pacific's police department, urges the public to “always expect a train” and encourages commercial drivers to know their vehicle's clearance and avoid getting high centered on a railroad crossing.

“We want to remind drivers to follow all laws regarding railroad crossings and never to cross railroad tracks unless you are sure that you can completely get across them,” said Rodriguez. “Union Pacific's No. 1 priority is the safety of our employees and communities, and this campaign aims to reinforce positive railroad safety behaviors for all Texans.”

Three additional Union Pacific employees lent their voices for the radio spots: Raquel Espinoza, director-Public Affairs; Jay Holman, senior special agent-Union Pacific Police Department; and former locomotive engineer Harry Stewart, currently manager of Union Pacific's Peer Support Services.

Billboards in locations that include Interstate 20 and Highway 80 read, “Every crossing. Extra caution,” “High centered. High danger,” “Keep your tail off the rail,” “Be Alert. Be Aware. Stay Alive,” and “Cuidado Con el Tren” (or “Use caution with the train”). Nearly 60,000 Midland- and Odessa-area drivers will view these messages during the next three months.

In addition to the advertising campaign, Union Pacific's Crossing Accident Reduction Education and Safety (UP CARES) initiative promotes pedestrian and driver safety through a variety of outreach channels:

  • Grade crossing education and enforcement, during which motorists violating rail crossing signage and laws are educated about the dangers of such actions. Related "positive enforcement" initiatives reward drivers who operate safely at grade crossings.
  • Safety trains, hosting local law enforcement, media and public officials and providing them the opportunity to ride in the locomotive cab and see traffic violations from a locomotive engineer's point of view. This also allows Union Pacific to connect with community leaders and help them better understand the railroad's safety focus.
  • Communication blitzes, which educate the public via community events, media outreach and paid advertising. Media outreach coincides with safety trains in UP communities.
