'G.I. Jobs' Names Union Pacific Railroad One of America's Top Military-Friendly Employers
Omaha, Neb., November 10, 2010 G.I. Jobs has named Union Pacific Railroad as one of America's top military-friendly employers for 2010. Ranked No. 12, it is the seventh time in eight years the nation's premier career guide for military job seekers has named Union Pacific to its list.
"Union Pacific recognizes the importance of hiring veterans," said Barb Schaefer, Union Pacific senior vice president - Human Resources. "They continue to represent the meaning of strong work ethics and extraordinary work experience. We are proud to have veterans choosing to make a career of railroading."
Union Pacific offers a wide range of job opportunities that lend themselves to employees with military backgrounds including train crew, diesel mechanics, diesel electricians, assistant signal workers and track laborers. The company offers leadership opportunities through its Operations Management Training Program.
The railroad's Human Resources group employs a military-specific recruiting plan that includes involvement at military transition offices, military education offices, reserve units, military panels, National Guard units, career fairs, information sessions, employer panels, resumé review assistance and serving on local military committees and boards. More than 10,000 Union Pacific employees are veterans.
In addition to being recognized by G.I. Jobs, Union Pacific was presented the Military Officers Association of America Distinguished Service Award in 2009, is a member of the Army Reserve's Employee Partnership Initiative, is a supporter of the Army Partnership for Youth Success program and is a past recipient of the Freedom Award, the U.S. government's highest employer recognition.
Earlier this year, Human Resource Executive named Union Pacific to its 50 Most Admired for Human Resources list, and Diversity Careers in Engineering and Information Technology recognized the railroad as a 2010 Best Diversity Company.
