Nebraska First Lady Honors Union Pacific Employees

Omaha, Neb., March 22, 2007 – During a special awards ceremony during the 2007 Governor’s Conference on Community Service, Nebraska First Lady Sally Ganem presented one of her Outstanding Community Service Awards to the employees of Union Pacific.

The First Lady’s Outstanding Community Service Awards recognize the outstanding work of individuals and groups dedicated to making Nebraska a better state in which to live, work, and raise families through volunteerism. A team of judges from across the state, led by Commissioners and staff from the Nebraska Volunteer Service Commission, chooses the winners in a number of individual categories.

The employees of Union Pacific were cited for their many volunteer activities. In the past year, employees volunteered their time and effort for the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes, Brush Up Omaha Paint-a-thon, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Race for the Cure, Salvation Army Back to School Drive, Red Cross Blood Drive, Nebraska Humane Society Walk for the Animals, a mentoring program for the Black Employee Network (BEN), mentoring activities for LEAD (Lead, Educate, Achieve and Develop), and many others.

In addition, the Union Pacific Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Union Pacific Corporation and Railroad, provided more than $800,000 in grants to 19 non-profit agencies and 35 schools in Nebraska through its Principal’s Partnership Program.

According to the Volunteer Service Commission, "The emphasis on community service is evident through the numerous volunteer hours given by Union Pacific employees and the donations made by the Union Pacific Foundation."
