Salt Lake City Awarded Membership in Union Pacific's Train Town USA Registry
Salt Lake City, Utah, July 24, 2012 Salt Lake City has been awarded membership in Union Pacific's Train Town USA Registry as part of the railroad's year-long 150TH anniversary celebration. Mayor Ralph Becker was joined on stage by Governor Gary Herbert and Elder Sam Clark from the LDS Church as Union Pacific presented an official Train Town USA resolution signed by Union Pacific Chairman Jim Young, making Salt Lake City an official part of Union Pacific's 150TH anniversary celebration across its 23-state network.
"Salt Lake City has always been a central part of Union Pacific Railroad's transcontinental railroad legacy," said Dan Harbeke, Union Pacific director - public affairs for Utah. "Building on that history, Salt Lake City plays a significant contemporary role in our system today."
The presentation was made as part of Union Pacific's 150TH anniversary celebration at the historic Union Pacific depot in downtown Salt Lake City. The LDS Church also participated in the event, commemorating Union Pacific's early dealings with the frontier leader Brigham Young. Today, Union Pacific has more than 1,400 employees in Utah operating more than 1,200 miles of track. Main lines of Union Pacific track radiate in every direction from the Salt Lake City-Ogden metropolitan area, making a major impact on the Utah economy.
