Pocatello Awarded Membership in Union Pacific's Train Town USA Registry
Roseville, Calif., July 06, 2012 Pocatello, Idaho, has been awarded membership in Union Pacific's Train Town USA Registry as part of the railroad's year-long 150th anniversary celebration. City officials in Pocatello received an official Train Town USA resolution signed by Union Pacific Chairman Jim Young today, making Pocatello an official part of Union Pacific's 150th anniversary celebration across its 23-state network.
"We are honored to include a community with a storied railroad history like Pocatello in our Train Town USA Registry," said Dan Harbeke, Union Pacific director - public affairs for Idaho. "This long history grows brighter as Union Pacific continues to play a crucial role in both the Pocatello and the Idaho economy."
Pocatello's railroad roots run deep with active railroad operations in the community since the late 1880s. Today, Pocatello is a critical terminal for Union Pacific in Idaho. Southern Idaho is laced with a network of railroad feeder lines serving Idaho's richly varied agricultural industry. Potatoes, sugar beets, beans, grain, fertilizer, phosphate and forest products are shipped by rail around the country. Pocatello's recognition as a Train Town USA is a fitting designation for a community with a historic and forward looking connection to Union Pacific.
