Omaha, Neb., May 10, 2012 Council Bluffs, Iowa has been awarded a membership in Union Pacific's Train Town USA Registry as part of the railroad's year-long 150th anniversary celebration.
Council Bluffs received an official Train Town USA resolution signed by Union Pacific Chairman Jim Young, and Council Bluffs' historical connection with Union Pacific will be featured at www.up150.com.
"We are proud to recognize Council Bluffs as we commemorate our railroad's sesquicentennial celebration and growing up together," said Brenda Mainwaring, Union Pacific director - Public Affairs for Iowa and Nebraska. "Union Pacific has been part of the country's fabric throughout the railroad's 150-year history. That bond between us and the nearly 7,300 communities we serve continues to strengthen.
"Our shared heritage with Council Bluffs is a source of pride as we remember our past while serving and connecting our nation for years to come."
Council Bluffs and Union Pacific Railroad share a rich and lengthy history together. The Golden Spike Monument was erected in 1939 near 21st St and 9th Avenue to commemorate the junction of the UP and the Central Pacific rail lines at Promontory Summit, Utah, on May 10, 1869. The monument also coincided with the premiere of the movie 'Union Pacific' that same year. Not far from the Golden Spike Monument is Mile Pole 0, where Union Pacific built a main line track in 1872. A second main line was constructed in 1884.
The Union Pacific Railroad Museum is housed in a historic Carnegie Library building in Council Bluffs, Iowa, where visitors will discover an extensive compilation of artifacts, photographs, documents and equipment from some of our nation's most ambitious endeavors - constructing the transcontinental railroad and settling the West, simultaneously chronicled in museum exhibits.
