Union Pacific Recognized Among Nation's Top 50 "Best Places to Launch a Career" by BusinessWeek
Company Honored for Providing Employee Opportunities and Rewards
Omaha, Neb., September 16, 2008 Union Pacific has been named one of the nation's top 50 "Best Places to Launch a Career" by BusinessWeek. The Sept. 15 issue of the magazine ranks UP as No. 39 on the list.
The "Best Places to Launch a Career" ranking is based on three surveys: a BusinessWeek poll of career-services directors at U.S. colleges; a survey of 50,000 U.S. college students conducted by Universam USA (a Philadelphia research company), and a BusinessWeek poll of the employers themselves.
The recognition comes at a time when Union Pacific is aggressively recruiting new employees to ensure consumer products, automobiles, coal and food continue to move across the nation's rail system. With nearly 40 percent of its workforce reaching retirement age in the next five years, Union Pacific is hiring several thousand employees in 2008, at all levels, from train service to management positions.
"Union Pacific brings a lot to the table when competing for top talent," said Barb Schaefer, senior vice president-Human Resources. "We work hard to provide employees with tools and skills necessary to advance quickly and take on jobs that are critical to running the nation's largest railroad."
In addition, UP offers a number of benefits that are attractive to job seekers, including tuition reimbursement, competitive benefits and compensations packages, affinity groups, fitness centers, systemwide training centers, mentoring and coaching, leadership and development programs, child care and an elder care referral network.
Union Pacific has been recognized a number of times for the opportunities it provides its workforce. In addition to BusinessWeek, Working Mother magazine, GI Jobs magazine, Forbes, Latina Style magazine, the National Business Group on Health and the United States Department of Defense also have honored Union Pacific.
