Union Pacific Railroad Invests Nearly $9 Million for Track Improvements to Its Line from Hiawatha, Kan., to Auburn, Neb.
Omaha, Neb., July 02, 2010 Union Pacific Railroad will improve Kansas' and Nebraska's transportation infrastructures by investing nearly $9 million to improve the rail line that runs from Hiawatha, Kan., to Auburn, Neb.
Work on the nearly 50-mile stretch of railroad track began July 1 and is scheduled to be completed by mid August.
The project includes removing and installing more than 57,000 ties, spreading 32,700 tons of rock ballast to reinforce the roadbed and replacing 80 grade crossing surfaces. Crews are also replacing more than three miles of rail in various curves between Kansas City, Kan., and Union, Neb. The curve rail project began June 11 and is scheduled to be completed by mid July.
Union Pacific plans to spend approximately $2.6 billion in 2010 to support America's current and future freight transportation needs and enhance the safety and efficiency of the railroad's 32,000-mile network. Improved and additional rail capacity benefits everyone. It allows freight rail service to grow, helping to build a cleaner environment. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, freight trains are nearly four times more fuel efficient than trucks. Motorists also benefit from reduced congestion on highways as a single Union Pacific train can remove up to 300 trucks off our roads.
