Union Pacific Schedules Track Maintenance on Portland-Eugene Main Line

Omaha, Neb., June 29, 2005 – Union Pacific Railroad track workers will continue a major maintenance project through July on its Portland-Eugene main line.

The project, which started in June, includes the installation of 93,000 new ties and the surfacing and lining of more than 60 miles of track for a smoother ride. It is part of more than $1 billion Union Pacific is spending this year for track maintenance.

The work crews totaling 160 people work in a cycle of eight days, then take seven days off, repeating until the project is finished. Trains are stopped during the maintenance workdays from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The July schedule will have work periods on the track July 1-7 and July 16-23, completing the Oregon project.
