- About 6 p.m. PDT on Thursday, March 15, a fire involving the east approach to a bridge over the American River in Sacramento was reported to Union Pacific Railroad police dispatchers.
- All train traffic was immediately stopped. When emergency responders arrived at the scene, the timber trestle east approach to the bridge was fully engulfed.
- The bridge is nearly 2,500 feet long, of which about 1,100 feet of the east approach has been destroyed.
- An Amtrak train went over the bridge about 15 minutes before the fire was reported and that train crew did not see any problems. The last UP train went over the bridge about 45 min. before the fire was reported and they too did not see any problems.
- Union Pacific bridge construction employees are in the process of getting resources to replace the approach with a concrete open deck structure and will begin work once the fire is out.
- About 50 trains a day go over this line and trains are being detoured over other UP routes.
- The detour is about 90 miles and goes from the downtown Sacramento area north to Marysville where it connects with another UP line that brings the trains south to reconnect with the east/west main about six miles east of Roseville. A connection will need to be constructed to improve westbound train movements.
- Air monitoring begins Friday morning in the vicinity of the fire and surrounding community.
- Environmental organizations conduct press briefing late Friday evening about air monitoring and sampling conducted at various locations in the vicinity and downwind of the fire for particulates and hazardous chemicals. Report that particulate concentrations outside of the smoke plume have not been out of the ordinary for this time of year.
- Crews worked throughout Thursday night, into Friday to remove the material destroyed by the fire. Demolition of the east approach was completed at 2:30 p.m. PDT on Friday.
- Work begins on the connection just east of Marysville that would improve westbound train movement on the detour route.
- The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
