Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway Company EJE #238
Nature of Firm
EJE runs from Waukegan, IL through Joliet to Gary, IN (120 miles). A branch runs from Walker to Goose Lake, IL (19.5 miles). A total of 169 miles are operated. Traffic includes coal, steel, petroleum products and general commodities.
History
The railroad was incorporated in 1887 to expand the Joliet, Aurora & Northern Railway into a belt line around Chicago. The EJE bought the JA&N the following year; other components of the EJE were the Chicago, Lake Shore & Eastern, Gardner, Coal City & Northern, and the Waukegan & Southwestern Railroads. Until 1988 the EJE was owned by U.S. Steel, which had a large steel mill at Gary. In 1988 the road was acquired (along with U.S. Steel’s other railroads) by Transtar Corporation. USX, successor to U.S. Steel, previously held 44 percent interest in Transtar, but in December 2000, USX acquired 100 percent interest.
