DME operates freight service over 1,100 miles of track located mainly in Southern Minnesota and South Dakota. DME’s mainline runs from Winona, MN to Rapid City, SD. Branch lines run from Waseca, MN to Mason City, IA; Huron to Watertown, SD; Wolsey to Aberdeen, SD; and Bentonite, WY to Rapid City to Chadron and Crawford, NE. Traffic includes grain and grain products, bentonite and kaolin clay, cement, and wood and wood products.
History
The DME began operations on September 5, 1986 over track acquired from the Chicago & Northwestern Transportation Company. The line from Bentonite to Rapid City to Crawford and Chadron was acquired on May 4, 1996 from Union Pacific.
