In May, 1991 Council Bluffs Railway acquired the Iowa Southern Railroad's 26-mile terminal switching operation at Council Bluffs, Iowa. CBGR acquired the property from National railway Systems, Castle Rock, CO which had operated this former NS/N&W line and the old main yard in Council Bluffs as the Council Bluffs & Ottumwa Railway from 1989-1992.
Traffic is primarily oats, corn, aggregates, scrap and the storage of and repair of rail cars for large independent fleets - about 10,000 cars a year.
CBGR is owned by Great Western Railway Company of Iowa, doing business as Council Bluffs Railway, a division of OmniTRAX.
