Receiving, Unloading and Releasing Your Rail Car

Receive Your Rail Car

If the receiving industry has more than one unloading track, the receiver should give Union Pacific placement or spotting instructions. Placement/Spotting instructions enable Union Pacific Railroad to correctly place rail cars in a specified track within the receiver's industry.

If the rail car to be received has been placed in constructive placement or hold awaiting placement, the customer must release it from the area and if necessary include placement instructions for it to be spotted to a specific area within the receiver's industry.

Receiving and releasing your rail car from constructive placement or hold awaiting placement can be facilitated through the Equipment Placement and Release Application.

Physically Unloading Your Rail Car

Once a rail car is received into an industry, the receiver has two (2) days to unload before daily demurrage fees are assessed. This may include weekends and some holidays. Customers also should be aware they may be subject to accessorial charges. For detailed descriptions of these charges, please visit our Terms and Conditions page.

Release Your Rail Car

Releasing your rail car tells Union Pacific Railroad that you are finished unloading your rail car. Once a rail car is released, UP will take the empty rail car out of the receiver's industry.

Releasing your empty rail car can be facilitated through the Equipment Placement and Release application.

Information on the Equipment Placement and Release Application can also be found on the Application Information page.
