Service Restored Following Oregon Mudslide
Union Pacific crews have finished restoring the main line track that was damaged in a mudslide south of Eugene, OR on January 19.   All trains that had been rerouted between Roseville, CA and Portland, OR during the reconstruction are now running at full capacity through the area.  Customers should expect a return to normal service levels.

Over the past several months, approximately 200 Union Pacific employees worked to clear the debris from the site, which totaled one million tons - about the weight of 25 super carrier Naval ships.  The clean up and construction required 150 pieces of construction equipment with a work train making an average 30 round trips a day to transport materials into and out of the site.  Crews built roads to reach the site, removed mud and other debris, brought in 700,000 tons of rock to restabilize the mountain and rebuilt the main line track structure.  As part of the effort, Union Pacific crews also helped salvage timber from the site, which is the property of the national Forestry Department - enough to build 66 three-bedroom homes.

Crews will continue working on clean-up efforts in the area for the next month.  A slide fence, which activates a warning if there is a subsequent slide, will also be constructed on the mountain.  Until the fence is complete in early June, the area will be continuously monitored to ensure the tracks are safe for rail traffic.

Pacific Northwest Repairs Continue
Crews continue to clear the debris from a mudslide that took out Union Pacific main line track south of Eugene, OR, on January 19.  Heavy snowfall has made work conditions difficult as crews work to remove an estimated 153,000 truckloads of downed trees, mud and snow from this remote location in order to restore the track.  At this point, track repairs are estimated to take at least another 4-6 weeks.

Northbound and southbound trains operating between Roseville, CA and Portland, OR, continue to be rerouted to minimize traffic delays. Customers with shipments moving in this corridor should continue to anticipate 24- to 48-hour delays due to the rerouting of trains.

Train operations have improved between Green River, WY and Seattle, WA, as winter weather conditions have started to moderate in this corridor.  Over the next several days, customers should continue to expect 24- to 72-hour delays in this corridor, as crews work off the backlog of trains, and operations return to normal.
