Background on Mine
This is a surface mine using one dragline with a production capacity in 2002/2003 of at least 250,000 tons per year from multiple seams.
A McNally-Pittsburg coal preparation plant crushes and sizes coal at a rate of 1,400 tons per hour at Medicine Bow mine. Sampling at Medicine Bow mine is accomplished via a two-stage automatic sampling system. An analysis facility is operated in the area by Arch for its Hanna Basin mines. Approved ASTM methods are used for both sampling and analysis.

Weighing System
Weighing at Medicine Bow is performed with a bin type scale. Weight determination is made by the meter method, with accuracy tested every six months. Inspection and calibration are performed by an independent consulting firm on a contractual basis. Export coal is weighed, sampled and analyzed at the Los Angeles coal export terminal in Long Beach, California.
