Peabody Holding Company, Inc. is a subsidiary of the Energy Group. The Energy Group is a diversified international energy company that also includes Eastern Group PLC, one of the leading integrated electricity and gas groups in the United Kingdom, and Citizens Power L.L.C., a power marketing company operating in the United States.
Peabody Holding Company, Inc., referred to as the Peabody Group, is the largest U.S. coal producer. Peabody Holding is headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri. Peabody, through its subsidiaries and affiliates, currently operates 29 mines and sold approximately 163 million tons of coal in fiscal year 1996, generating annual revenues exceeding $2 billion. The companies own or control nearly 12 billion tons of steam and metallurgical coal reserves worldwide.
Peabody COALSALES Company, PWCC's and PRCC's sales agent, markets 156 million tons of coal annually in the United States, making it the largest U.S. coal sales organization. COALSALES, through its affiliates, supplies coal to domestic utility customers, including 154 electrical power plants in 34 states. The tons shipped annually to these customers represent about 15 percent of the coal used by U.S. power plants. Coal-fired power plants currently generate 56 percent of all U.S. electricity.
Peabody Western Coal Company, based in Flagstaff, Arizona, produces 17 million tons per year and manages four surface mines in Arizona, Colorado and Montana, employing 1,180 people. Powder River Coal Company, based in Gillette, Wyoming, produces over 90 million tons per year and manages four surface mines in the Southern Powder River Basin in Wyoming, employing over 1,000 people.
