General Overview
Black Butte Coal Company, located in southwest Wyoming, managed by the Kiewit Mining Group, produces a high-energy, low-sulphur coal. Black Butte Coal Company was formed in 1974 and began shipping coal in 1979. Black Butte is a joint venture between Level 3 and Anadarko Petroleum. Black Butte currently produces in excess of four million tons annually, and can load coal into large unit trains and into individual trucks. The mine also has the ability to produce a specialty coal product for the industrial market.
The Kiewit Mining Group is a part of Peter Kiewit Sons', Inc., an employee-owned company headquartered in Omaha, NE. The company was established in 1884 and is a leader in the construction, mining and telecommunication businesses. Kiewit Mining Group manages the company's coal mines, construction materials and quarry operations. The company employs around 2,000 people and operates coal mines in Wyoming, Montana and Texas. The Mining Group offers a diverse mining experience that is put to use in developing resources in joint ventures with other companies.
