Union Pacific Automotive Facilities

Union Pacific Railroad is the largest automotive carrier west of the Mississippi River, directly serving seven vehicle assembly plants and distributing imported vehicles from six West Coast ports and one Gulf port. UP operates 38 vehicle distribution centers, covering all major western U.S. cities. These centers serve as rail car-to-truck haulaway operations for all major automotive manufacturers. Union Pacific also provides expedited handling of automobile parts in both boxcars and containers to several assembly plants.

Mexico also is an important automotive market for the UP, as manufacturers continue to locate both vehicle manufacturing and parts facilities at locations throughout the country. Automotive parts flow both ways across the border, bound for assembly plants in Mexico and the United States.  Mexico business accounts for nearly 40 percent of our automotive volume.

Union Pacific handles more than 800,000 carloads of automobiles and auto parts each year. Vehicles, including a variety of cars, trucks, mini-vans and sport utility vehicles move in specially-designed multi-level rail cars on expedited service trains to distribution centers across the western United States. Union Pacific's fleet of more than 18,000 multi-level rail cars is the largest in the industry, at more than one third of the international fleet.
