Wyoming
Services and Commodities

Union Pacific has played such a large part in the development of Wyoming that many of its citizens refer to the railroad as "Uncle Pete." Today that role is as important as ever, since the railroad is crucial to the marketing of the state's natural resources. Union Pacific, which hauls more coal than any other commodity, serves the coal-rich Powder River Basin in north central Wyoming.
Growth in the Powder River Basin has been enormous since the line was opened in 1984. More than 60 coal trains a day now travel to and from the basin.
Wyoming's other major natural resource, soda ash, is mined in the Green River area. Union Pacific moves the soda ash, which is used for making glass, paint and other products, to domestic markets and export terminals throughout the United States.
Five of Union Pacific's top customers in Wyoming are FMC Wyoming, Kennecott Energy Company, Peabody Coal, Arch Mineral Corporation, and Cyprus Amax.
Union Pacific's transcontinental main line across southern Wyoming hosts as many as 65 trains a day. Crew change terminals and switching yards and related facilities are maintained at Cheyenne, Rawlins and Green River.
Cheyenne is also the home base for Union Pacific's historic collection of vintage locomotives, including two operational steam locomotives which tour various parts of the system each year.
