Utah

Commodities and Facilities

Utah is a vital crossroads for Union Pacific. Main lines radiate north, south, east and west from Salt Lake City-Ogden.

Major commodities handled in Utah include metals, minerals, manufactured products, automobiles and automobile parts. Among the most important commodities originating in the state is coal. Utah coal moves on UP to power plants in Utah and in northern and southern Nevada. Export coal bound for Pacific Rim countries moves in unit trains to the southern California harbors at Long Beach and Los Angeles. Some of the top UP customers in Utah include Coastal States Energy and Cyprus Coal.

Terminal facilities are maintained in Ogden and Salt Lake City. Salt Lake City is home to the railroad's main technical training center.

Of special interest is the Golden Spike National Historic Site, north of the Great Salt Lake at Promontory Summit. This is the location of the driving of the final spike on May 10, 1869. Union Pacific met Central Pacific at this point, completing the first transcontinental railroad.
