Union Pacific Railroad follows the historic route of the Oregon Trail into the state over the Blue Mountains in the eastern end of Oregon, to wind along the south bank of the Columbia River to Portland.
A major classification yard, Hinkle, is located in the northeastern corner of the state near the small town of Hermiston. Major switching yards also are operated in Portland, along with related servicing facilities for locomotives. A new major diesel locomotive maintenance shop is located at the Hinkle terminal, and La Grande, at the eastern foot of the Blue Mountain crossing, is an important operational and crew change point.
Amtrak passenger service is operated north-south over UP's "I-5 corridor" main line between Portland and California.
Major commodities handled by the railroad in Oregon include lumber and forest products, automobiles and trucks, grain, fruits and manufactured products. The Port of Portland is an important terminal for import and export traffic on the railroad, including grain and automobiles.
