Minnesota

Corridors and Clientele

Union Pacific owns the two main rail corridors traversing the southern border of the state. The "Spine Line" runs south from the Twin Cities to Kansas City, Missouri. The other corridor runs in a southwest direction from the Twin Cities to Sioux City, Iowa and Omaha, Nebraska. Union Pacific also has trackage rights over Burlington Northern Santa Fe track from Minneapolis to Duluth.

Union Pacific serves unit train shippers located in prime corn and soybean areas, including flour mills, malt houses, soybean processors and numerous rail-to-transfer stations. The railroad's top three customers in Minnesota are Northern States Power, Unimin, and traffic destined for Dairyland Power Cooperative in Wisconsin. Unimin is the largest producer of industrial sand in the United States. Its twin sand plants at Ottawa and Kasota, Minnesota, located on Union Pacific, represent the largest production facilities for frac sand in the United States.

In the twin cities, the St. Paul (Drake Street) ramp serves as the destination facility for inbound shipments of Toyota, Mazda and Mitsubishi vehicles.
