Union Pacific operates more than 8,000 locomotives, nearly one-third the total of all the locomotives on Class One railroads in the U.S.

 

The Union Pacific Roster

The UP roster is divided into three locomotive types: diesel freight, diesel switch and slug units, and diesel and steam excursion engines. Each type of locomotive performs a different function.

  • Freight engines pull freight cars long distances,
  • Switch engines and slug units move cars around rail yards, and
  • Passenger engines pull cars for excursions.
